Department: Library FTE: 1.0 Position Summary: Southern Oregon University Hannon Library seeks an innovative and dynamic librarian to lead the development and management of Hannon Library's cataloging efforts, digital projects, and unique collections. The successful candidate will facilitate discovery and ensure access to our collections through high quality cataloging and metadata practices. This position will also provide vision and leadership for our unique digital collections as well as our physical special collections. We aspire to a positive and inclusive climate and culture. The Cataloging & Digital Projects Librarian will oversee cataloging operations and perform original cataloging for materials that are not otherwise cataloged in OCLC. This position will stay abreast of emerging trends and best practices related to cataloging and metadata, especially in accordance with our consortium's standards, and will collaboratively develop workflows and procedures for cataloging and metadata services. The librarian provides management and expertise for Hannon Library's digital projects. The Southern Oregon Digital Archives (SODA) currently includes 18 collections in CONTENTdm, several of which are still growing. We also have an online University Archives collection and a nascent Institutional Repository. The new librarian will both administer current collections and collaboratively develop new collections that support our curricular needs and/or showcase our unique region or collection strengths. The Cataloging & Digital Projects Librarian will also oversee our physical unique collections and, in partnership with the Archivist, cultivate the collection in alignment with the library's mission. This position supervises the Digital Projects Specialist and the Archivist, as well as the cataloging activities of the Cataloging Technician. The librarian chairs the Hannon Library's Digital Projects/Special Collections Team and serves as both the Technical Services and Unique & Local Content Representatives to our consortium, the Orbis Cascade Alliance. In alignment with academic background and library need, this librarian will be assigned subject liaison areas. In this role, the librarian will provide faculty-requested instruction sessions and serve as collection coordinator for these disciplines. The librarian will develop and promote instructional and user support materials that assist campus and distance students in their program, including LibGuides and online tutorials and videos. The librarian will also be responsible for selecting book purchases for their subject areas. Southern Oregon University is committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive learning environment for all students. In our efforts to further this goal, each librarian will be a Hannon Library liaison to a student group associated with equity, inclusion, and diversity. The Cataloging & Digital Projects Librarian will strive to implement updated metadata descriptions compatible with campus and consortium practices as controlled vocabularies and standards evolve. Other major responsibilities include providing research guidance at the Research Help Desk (6-8 hours/week), via email, and in one-on-one consultations to a diverse student body and faculty with interdisciplinary research interests. The librarian will also participate in library committees and team-based projects. This position reports directly to the University Librarian and is a tenure-track faculty position. The librarian will be expected to participate in service and scholarly activities commensurate with faculty rank. Southern Oregon University is a public liberal arts institution of approximately 4,000 undergraduate and 500 graduate students. The surrounding area is known for cultural offerings such as the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the Ashland International Film Festival, and the Britt Music Festival.
