The Research Software Engineer provides high-level professional technical support for research activities at the Center for Health Systems Effectiveness (CHSE). The Center is devoted to transforming health systems through actionable cross-disciplinary and collaborative research. This position is responsible for the ongoing development and maintenance of a data infrastructure for national Medicaid administrative data via CMS Transformed Medicaid Statistical Information System (T-MSIS),and building out management and analysis tools to support research staff analyzing this dataset. Major components of the work include:
Development and maintenance of the software ecosystem around the T-MSIS dataset
Management and development of validation processes to ensure data quality
Creation of supporting documentation to characterize the dataset and facilitate use by CHSE researchers and collaborators
Lead initiatives in reproducible research and open source collaboration on the T-MSIS code base
Lead CHSE initiatives in grid computing and storage architecture
Analyze applications and systems to identify opportunities for simplification and/or enhancement
Active contribution to the review of working practices, development of data analysis and management of standard operating procedures
This position has the potential to be fully remote OR in Portland, Oregon at the South Waterfront campus.
Masters or Bachelors degree with major courses in a technical field
Minimum of 3 years relevant experience (with Masters degree) or 5 years relevant experience (with Bachelors degree)
Experience working with large (> 1 TB) datasets
Knowledge of grid computing concepts and theory
Proficiency in Python/R or other scripting language
Experience working in Linux/Unix environment
Ability to exercise sound judgment in making decisions and maintain thorough documentation of the decision-making process
Exemplary communication skills and ability to effectively
Strong commitment to rigorous research methods, objectivity and accuracy of findings, and reproducibility of results
Demonstrated experience in claims data management and analysis, such as Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance data
Familiarity with SQL and R.
Interest in public health or issues relevant to health services research and health program/policy evaluation communicate complicated processes to diverse audiences within and outside OHSU
