The Division of Gastrointestinal and General Surgery is a comprehensive team of 14 surgeons focused on the following areas of surgery; General, Colorectal, Esophageal, Hepatobiliary, Surgical Oncology, Complex Abdominal Wall and Surgical Nutrition. The general surgeons support numerous clinical research trials and actively partner with scientists in the community to develop innovative surgical devices. The general surgery division also encompasses one of the largest residency programs in the country, as well as fellowships in minimally invasive surgery and colorectal surgery.
The Digestive Health Center, the clinical site for General Surgery, is located at the Center for Health and Healing at the South Waterfront. The Digestive Health Center at OHSU brings together a wide range of digestive disease specialists to provide interdisciplinary patient care. Gastroenterologists, general and bariatric surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, pathologists and pulmonologists work as a team to provide coordinated treatment.
The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is a key member of a multi-disciplinary patient care team, which includes physicians who represent both medical and surgical disciplines, residents, nurses, dieticians, and other clinical and business support staff. The APP provides direct advanced practice nursing care for patients. S/he assesses patient and family needs both pre- operatively as well as post- operatively, develops a plan of care, implements and evaluates the care delivered. The APP serves as key communication link between the referring providers, patient, his/her family, and the care team. The APP is a continuous advocate for patients and their families. The APP practices in accord with professional standards, core values, and with a commitment to service excellence. The APP reports to the center manager of the Digestive Health Center (DHC), supports the colorectal surgeons, and has a collegial relationship with the health care providers and staff within the DHC.
