The Department of Wood Science & Engineering invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), 12-month, fixed term Faculty Research Assistant position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.
This position has primary responsibility for research and residential instruction support in the Department of Wood Science & Engineering. The incumbent will work closely with researchers, instructors and students in a collaborative manner to support lab-based instruction and experimental aspects of scholarly activities related to the science, technology, and design of renewable materials.
This position directly supports the research and resident instruction mission of the University and Department by pro-active management of shared lab spaces, providing technical and research support to faculty and students in the areas of safe use of lab tools and equipment, instrumentation, development of custom lab procedures, special tools and equipment, as well as ensuring sound experimental practice and etiquette.
The incumbent will manage shared laboratory facilities and lab and field tools and equipment, including maintenance, repairs and recommendations for upgrades and replacements of lab tools and equipment to ensure the lab environment is in operational condition, and taking an active role in procurement and installation of new lab tools, equipment and test materials (as requested by client faculty). The incumbent will manage and supervise research activities in shared laboratory or field settings, and assists in collecting, managing, analyzing, and interpreting data, and in preparing research reports.
The incumbent will design, procure or fabricate, assemble, troubleshoot, and maintain in operational condition a wide variety of experimental setups, and will operate and maintain an inventory of related scientific apparatus and lab equipment. The incumbent will model and promote the highest standards in safe operating practices for industrial laboratory settings. This responsibility includes active involvement in developing and responsibility for enforcing departmental lab safety policies, assisting in creating and managing a library of standard operation procedures, and providing training to students and other lab users for safe operation of lab tools and equipment in a welcoming and bias-free work environment.
Requires Bachelor’s degree in discipline appropriate to the field in which research is being conducted.
A Bachelor's degree in science or engineering, or equivalent field.
Two years of experience in a research laboratory or similar setting that yields transferrable skills.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Experience working with diverse user groups such as undergraduates, graduate students, high school interns, industry collaborators, and trainees.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
This position is required to work in a lab/manufacturing environment with large machinery, with some office/computing work.
The ability to lift up to 60 pounds of project materials is required.
This position typically works an 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. work schedule. However, evening and/or weekend work may be required to meet project deadlines.
The ability to travel as needed to meet with industry partners and other external stakeholders is required.
