Department Summary This position is part of Research and Instructional Services (RIS), located in the Knight Library at the University of Oregon. This department consists of eleven full-time Non-Tenure Track Faculty with Librarian Rank who report directly to the Head of RIS. Employees in this department have both internal and external outreach, as they provide research and instruction to the larger University of Oregon community. Individual librarians are considered subject specialists and focus primarily on the school, college, or program(s) detailed in their position description.
Position Summary Reporting to the Head of Research and Instructional Services, the Social Science Librarian/Journalism serves as the liaison for the School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) and has responsibilities, which include developing collections for the School and providing services that support the curriculum and research needs of the School including the Portland and online programs. The purpose of this position is to provide library and course-integrated instruction; actively promote seminars, workshops, and classes; consult with faculty, academic researchers, staff, and students; and collaborate with library colleagues and teaching faculty on developing new methods of delivering reference, research, and instruction services. This librarian serves as a point person for current and emerging trends in SOJC-related scholarly communication, open educational resources, and research trends. Working in the Libraries’ highly collaborative and team-based environment, this librarian may also participate in the development of SOJC-related e-research tools, data support, digital scholarship services, and Special Collections projects.
As a member of the RIS Department, this position provides reference services in a full range of humanities and social sciences via Research Desk, email, and chat, and also participates in general instruction sessions such as Writing courses.
To meet criteria for retention and promotion, the librarian participates in appropriate professional development activities and organizations to stay current with trends and practices, and contributes to the University’s goals regarding equity and inclusion.
Minimum Requirements • ALA-accredited Master’s in Library and Information Science/Studies. • Strong academic background in the disciplines of journalism or media studies.

Preferred Qualifications • Experience with digital and print resources/databases in the relevant subject areas. • Public service experience in an academic library and demonstrated awareness of changing reference services environment. • Experience in book selection, fund management, and other collection development issues. • Teaching experience. • Advanced degree in the social sciences. • Demonstrated professional development activity. • Demonstrated understanding of issues related to scholarly communication (e.g., copyright, authors’ rights, open access, etc.). • Demonstrated knowledge of library/academic information technologies and current research trends in journalism, and communication and media studies (e.g., digital scholarship, e-research, data management, scholarly communication, and preservation). • Commitment to undergraduate learning. • Evidence of strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills. • Demonstrated flexibility, initiative, and problem-solving skills. • Demonstrated interpersonal skills, evidenced by the ability to work independently and to collaborate effectively with staff at all levels and with people of diverse backgrounds.
