Research - Laboratory/Non-Laboratory, Staff/Administrative
Under the general supervision, performs clinical and/or research laboratory experiments by following established procedures and protocols or with instruction. Uses basic science knowledge to learn techniques/methods of the lab. Runs lab tests and completes measurements as assigned. Identifies and resolves common problems and uses analytical skills to implement assigned projects. Understands the role of senior lab members and accepts constructive guidance. Sets-up experiments based on defined standards. Collects and maintains project data.
Specific duties & responsibilities:
Follows routine protocols under the supervision and mentorship of a faculty investigator.
Performs laboratory tests and/or experiments following established procedures or protocols, which may include performing immunohistochemistry procedures and assisting with bench lab work.
Helps to perform various experimental procedures that include a working knowledge of microbiology, immunology and molecular biology techniques. The experimental procedures include: human organotypic cell cultures, various other human and mouse cell cultures, isolation of mouse and human cells from peripheral blood, isolation of mouse and human cells from the skin, immunohistochemistry, immunoassays (ELISA, myeloperoxidase assays), molecular biology techniques such as isolation of RNA, RT-PCR, real-time PCR, gel electrophoresis, affinity column purification, FACS/Flow cytometry, intracellular staining, and protein analysis and quantification (e.g. western blots).
Transfects cells with various constructs to enable cells to overexpress or inhibit expression of various factors involved in the immune response.
Develops various therapeutic strategies to modify keratinocyte and fibroblast biology.
Operates requisite laboratory equipment and instruments, records data, and perform laboratory tests, making minor adjustments as required.
Prepare tissues for study utilizing radio assays and immunohistochemical techniques.
Monitors inventory levels and orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures as required for experimental protocols.
May participate in planning experiments and evaluating/interpreting test results utilizing detailed knowledge of research laboratory procedures and practices.
Uses sterile techniques to avoid contaminating lab experiments.
Uses universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from biohazardous materials, including blood-borne pathogens. Complies with biohazard/radiation safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents and/or radiation sources. Completes annual university biohazard/universal precaution/radiation safety training, as appropriate, as well as other required online and in-person trainings and compliance requirements.
Monitors equipment performance and maintenance schedules. May perform routine repair or replacement of standard parts.
SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY
Knows the informal policies, procedures and practices necessary to conduct the normal function of a specific section, unit, or work area. Is aware of the role of the position and its potential impact on the working unit, and within the Department. Functions as a member of a team, working to promote an atmosphere of respect, collegiality, integrity and discovery.
On a regular and continuous basis, follows experimental protocols, complies with biohazard/radiation safety standards. Engages in regular and continuous decision making having an impact on people, costs, and/or quality of service.
Carries out duties and responsibilities with limited supervision. Makes decisions and establishes work priorities on essentially procedure-oriented operations. Exchanges non-routine information using tact and persuasion as appropriate requiring good oral and written communications skills. Practices service recovery and demonstrates service excellence in all aspects of the job.
Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field.
Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.
Must have a working knowledge of one or more of the following disciplines achieved through undergraduate studies. Related research laboratory experience strongly preferred. Knowledge of good lab practices.
