Department Summary The Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact is a billion-dollar initiative designed to fast-track scientific discoveries and the process of turning those discoveries into innovations that improve the quality of life for people in Oregon, the nation and beyond. The Knight Campus will reshape the higher education landscape in Oregon by training the next generations of scientists, forging tighter ties with industry and entrepreneurs and creating new educational opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students.
The Knight Campus Academic Programs currently consist of about 120 students with an annual operating budget of approximately $2M. The Knight Campus will be adding new academic programs to our portfolio in the coming months and will continue to grow and add more programs in the coming couple of years. The Academic Business Manager will have daily business operations oversight for all academic programs (both existing and future) in the Knight Campus.
Position Summary The Academic Business Manager will manage the business operations of the Knight Campus academic programs. This position has the authority and responsibility to make decisions related to internal controls, compliance, policy and procedure, business and financial transactions, administrative issues, and human resources within the Knight Campus academic programs.
The Academic Business Manager is responsible for overseeing of business administration for the Knight Campus academic programs including fiscal management of the academic program budget, professional development funds, foundation funds, and tuition returns. This position will participate in strategic planning to determine the allocation of financial, personnel, and office resources to achieve the goals of the academic programs. This position will also strategically create and implement the operational processes that are unique to the academic programs and provide key linkages between internal stakeholders.
The Academic Business Manager must possess the ability to plan and organize to ensure the completion of tasks and to manage and support others to succeed in their roles. This position must be able to apply process and procedure and achieve compliance, and comprehend issues surrounding sustainability in resource use. The Academic Business Manager will also have continually increasing supervisory responsibilities as the academic business team will need to grow to support the programmatic, student, and personnel growth. The person in this position must be able to work with a diverse population, be sensitive to cultural differences, and to solve problems quickly.
The Academic Business Manager will report directly to the Associate Director of Operations. This position requires the ability to communicate and work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of backgrounds while maintaining the highest ethical standards in the workplace.
Minimum Requirements • Bachelor’s degree OR four years of progressive work experience in business or operations administration. AND • Five years of progressive business management experience including financial, program, and project management.
Professional Competencies • Demonstrated high-level attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and consistent follow through. • Demonstrated ability to learn and follow processes, plus demonstrated good, independent judgement on when and how to deviate from processes. • Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills. • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate and work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures; Commitment to promoting an inclusive work environment. • Proficiency with software and technology, including electronic calendars, word processing, and spreadsheets.
Preferred Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree with emphasis in accounting, finance, business administration, HR, or related field. • Professional administration experience in an academic unit at a college or university. • Experience with BANNER or similar information system. • Experience with complex financial and administrative policies, rules, and procedures.
